Zalando wins Belgian E-Commerce Award

The Belgian version of the German fashion pure-player Zalando, active in 14 European markets, was awarded the prize of best Belgian webshop at this year’s BeCommerce Awards in Tervuren. Wijnand Jongen, president of the Dutch online retail association Thuiswinkel.org and chairman of the executive committee of Ecommerce Europe handed out the award for the best webshop of Belgium to Zalando.be

Zalando is consequently going to represent Belgium at the European E-Commerce Awards at the Global E-Commerce Sumit in June in Barcelona. In 2012, Zalando had also won the Cross- Border Award in Barcelona.

At the eve of May 15th 2013, the Belgian e-commerce and distance selling association BeCommerce gave out the national e-commerce awards during a festive ceremony held at the Kolonienpaleis at Tervuren close to Brussels.

This year, the awards have been more popular than ever, with more than twice as much cases presented to the jury than in the previous year. Of the 195 candidatures, 70 were newcomers who started an online shop only this year. “The dynamics of e-commerce is pushed by new players”, commented Michel Koch, Head of International Multichannel Trading at Marks & Spencer and president of the jury.

One of the highlights of the evening was the appearance of the EU Commissioner for trade,
Karel de Gucht, who addressed the audience stressing the importance of common norms and standards for trade in Europe in order to gain competitive strength on the global market place.

Wijnand Jongen, president of the Dutch online retail association Thuiswinkel.org and chairman of the executive committee of Ecommerce Europe, officially offered the latest results of Ecommerce Europe’s research to Commissioner de Gucht, bundled in an infographic showing the growth and enormous potential of European E-commerce.

Wijnand Jongen also handed out the award for the best webshop of Belgium to Zalando.be, who, according to Michel Koch, “has made an impressive leap in a very short time”. Launched only one year ago, the localized Belgian site of Zalando boasts over 50-60000 visitors per day. The way the company “seduced the Belgian customers” by creating brand awareness via diverse channels won over the jury: “You have rolled out Belgium like no one has done before”, said Michel Koch.

Zalando will represent Belgium at the European E-Commerce Awards at the Global E-Commerce Summit in Barcelona, where it will compete against national award winners from other European countries. For Ecommerce Europe, the Global E-Commerce Summit is a crucial international event, emphasized Wijnand Jongen. “Topics such as legislation, logistics and e-privacy are going to be discussed. These issues are core points in Ecommerce Europe’s activities.”

Winner Zalando had also been nominated for the “Starter Award”, which was won by Famousbox.be. Newpharma.be won the Belgian cross-border award, ad the Dutch bol.com was awarded prize in the category “Multimedia”. The electronics category was headed by Replacedirect.be.
