UK-retail’s Future is Online

In an interview recently with the English Sunday Telegraph, Mark Price, general director of Waitrose, spoke about the future of the British retail sector. Now that 2–3% of all shopping is being done online in the United Kingdom, it is clear that online shopping is becoming increasingly important.

He disclosed that the average sum spent online with Waitrose is 100 pounds, five times as high as the average amount spent in the shop. The supermarket chain even has a “dark shop” where employees only deal with incoming online orders. Waitrose expects expansion in this type of shops in the future. Price expects in the end that as much as 20% of shopping will be done online.
