B2C e-commerce sales grew by double digits again in Southern Europe. In 2014, this growth amounted to 15.4%, resulting in a total B2C e-commerce turnover of € 47.3bn. In comparison, in the preceding year, Southern European online sales grew by 19.2% and for 2015 an increase of 13.5% is expected. This means the turnover will grow to more than € 50bn in 2015.
This is evident from the Southern European B2C E-commerce Report that Ecommerce Europe has published in cooperation with the Ecommerce Foundation. In addition, the report is powered by GfK, Global Collect|Ingenico and Asendia.
Within Southern Europe, Spain is the largest B2C e-commerce market, with an online B2C turnover of € 16.9bn. It is followed by Italy with € 13.3bn and Turkey with € 9.8bn. Although the online B2C turnover in Greece is not that high, they are the region’s biggest spenders with an average spending of € 1,624. This is followed by Portugal with an average spending of € 1,330 and Turkey with € 1,245. The country with the biggest online B2C market, Spain, completes the top four with an average spending of € 1,174.
The share of B2C e-commerce in the Gross Domestic Country, or eGDP, is also a good indicator of the importance of B2C e-commerce within a country or region. With an eGDP of 1.28%, Southern Europe ranks the lowest of all European regions. Although Southern Europe has the lowest eGDP, it is interesting to see that this rate has increased by more than 250% since 2009. This demonstrates that e-commerce within the Southern European economy is becoming more and more important.
