French consumers made more than 600 million online transactions in 2013. In total, these amounted to €51.1bn in online turnover. In addition, the share of online sales of goods in total retail sales of goods increased from 4.5% in 2012 to 5.5% last year.
In 2013, there were 138,000 active e-commerce sites, which represented an increase of 12% compared to the preceding year. In the first quarter of 2014 the number of websites continued to grow, now reaching 144,000 active e-commerce sites.
The territory of France covers 551,695 km2, making France the largest country in Western Europe. France is a unitary semi-presidential republic with several overseas territories and islands. It possesses the second-largest exclusive economic zone in the world, covering 11,035,000 km2 . In terms of B2C e-commerce, France is a prominent country in Europe.
