Facebook is the most popular social media platform in Belgium. Of the entire Belgian population of 11.2 million people in 2013, around 44% (4.9 million inhabitants) used Facebook. This means that 53% of the online population in Belgium had a Facebook account last year.

Especially people between the ages of 18 and 44 years were keen on using this platform. In total, this age group accounted for almost two thirds of all the Facebook users. In addition, there was not much difference in gender, with 51.9% of the users being male and 48.1% female.

In comparison with Facebook, Twitter was not that popular in Belgium last year. Only 3.2% of the entire population had a Twitter account, which equaled approximately 365,000 users.
