European distribution develops thanks to marketplaces

The top 20 of online shopping sites gives pride of place to “marketplaces”. Greg Zémor, Founder and Director of Marketing at Neteven, makes the point in a JDN column.

The situation is very advanced in France with 9 representatives in the top 20 market places, something that is probably peculiar to the local situation. In other European countries, the marketplace scene is more concentrated around a few names and aimed at a large audience (Play.com/Rakuten and HMV in the UK; Hitmeister, Otto, Rakuten and Zalando in Germany) leaving room for brand sites, but their weight is also notable.
