Southern Europe is a fertile ground for online retail activities: Of 128 million active internet users, 40 million are buying goods or products online. Online retail generates at present estimated 1,8% of total retail. The region, consisting of Spain, Italy, Turkey, Greece, Portugal, Croatia, Cyprus and Malta, has generated an e-commerce turnover totaling €33,5bn in 2012. Over the year 2013, an increase to €39,5bn is expected.
With total e-commerce sales of €12,9bn, Spain is heading up the Southern European Region, ahead of Italy (€9,5bn) and Turkey (€5,4bn). With a year-on-year growth of 27.9% over 2012, the Southern European Region outperforms the European (+19%) and EU-28 (+18%) average.
